Compress PDF

Reduce a PDF's file size by re-rendering its pages as optimized images.

How it works

Each page is rendered to an image at the resolution you pick and re-saved as a JPEG at your chosen quality, then rebuilt as a PDF. Lower quality and resolution mean a smaller file.

The trade-off

Because pages become images, selectable text and links are lost. It's ideal for scanned documents and forms you only need to read or print, and a poor fit for PDFs you need to search or copy from.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device, so your files never leave your computer and there is no file-size limit imposed by a server. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory.

How do I get under an email size limit?

Start at 60% quality and 100 DPI. If it's still too big, lower both a little at a time — scans stay readable at 70–100 DPI.

Why is my file not smaller?

PDFs that are already mostly text are tiny, and turning them into images can make them bigger. Keep the original in that case.
